Project: Chlorine dioxide generators for the treatment of potable water

At the Kuopio University Hospital, several high-legionella bacterial concentrations were found on the potable water network sampling points. Legionella bacteria is known to increase a significant risk for serious infections to patients. Legionella bacteria grows especially on the piping biofilm that is difficult to remove.

Two On-line Evoqua DIOX chlorine dioxide generators were installed to different places of the potable water network inside the hospital. Chlorine dioxide breaks down the biofilm and kills legionella bacteria’s that are accumulated to the potable water piping over the many years in operation. The dosing of chlorine dioxide is made according to flow and the concentration of it needs to monitored with on-line measurement and regular basis hand measurements.

Chlorine dioxide is a cost-effective way to combat against legionella, alternative techniques such as raising the temperature of the warm potable water and the chemical rinses with tight intervals of pipelines are much more expensive and/or difficult to make.
